With the amount of beer we've been brewing in anticipation of launching combined with both the increased accessibility and visibility of GrassLands, we decided to get as interactive as we could. We're always excited to taste our beer, even immediately following the boil :P ...and judging from what we've been hearing, so are you. With that in mind and since it's been voiced so loudly, we'd like to set this up for you, dear readers: a review club specifically for future GrassLands' Brewing Company beers. You don't have to be a nationally ranked beer judge for BJCP...just someone who enjoys beer! We'll call this the...
GrassHoppers Review Club!
What GrassLands will provide:
- Beer (aka yeast samples) - more specifically, a 12 oz bottle of whatever I've most recently brewed. I'll either send this to you or hand-deliver it directly to yo' face!
What you'll provide:
- Your honest review of the beer - more specifically, something that goes along the lines of Beer Advocate's review system. Basically, we want your personal experience and perspective regarding the following:
- Overall Impression
- Your Suggestions (should you feel the beer could be improved by making changes here & there)
- Any shipping/handling costs (boooooo)
In the link above, Beer Advocate gives you an overview of each of the bulleted items (save for your suggestions), that way it's easy for you to review GrassLands' beer! All I'd ask you to do is provide your input for the above bullets and a rating for each bullet from 1 to 5 (1=poor, 5=excellent). You can be as lengthy or creative as you want with your review. Hell, post a YouTube review - I welcome any and all. :)
Oh yeah, all our beers are available for check-in/review through Untappd or BrewskiMe!
All you have to do to get this ball rolling: Click Here and send me your name & contact info (which will be kept confidential), that way, you're eligible to receive a GrassLands sample! Or, at the very least, we can arrange a dropoff if I'm in your neck of the woods or you're welcome to come to any of our awesome GrassLands Tasting Shindigs! If I neglected to imply this already, you've gotta be 21...obviously. Let's not get GrassLands in trouble before it even gets off the ground! All new members are subject to an age verification form - I will send this to you. I'm assuming that you're at least 21 if you're reading this, but without verification, I won't be able to give you a sample.
Here's how the (updated) lottery selection system will work:
We typically keg all our beers and reserve only a few bottles of each batch (3 out of about 50 or so) for competition purposes. With this new system, we'll bottle an extra 3 bottles for user-reviewing purposes. That'll cap the total number of beers that can be reviewed at any given time, unfortunately.
Now, in 2012, when times were great, we sent out three samples free o'charge every lottery. Since 2013 and 2014 are our "capital-building" years, we have to significantly cut back on spending. What this means, unfortunately, is that we can no longer send out free samples. Typically, the shipping charges range, depending on where you live, anywhere between $5 to $15 for a 12 oz sample sent through FedEX.
I've indicated that we'll be doing a lottery the last Thursday of every month. Here's how it'll work: I'll send all the registered GrassHopper Review Club members an email the Monday before, informing them of the samples that are available in this month's lottery. Then, if you wish to be eligible to receive, you'll simply "opt-in" by emailing me back with your response. Since we're only bottling 3 (usually) out of every batch, I can't guarantee that even if you opt-in that you'll receive a sample. Because of increased demand, we utilize MS Excel
lent as our lottery system. This system randomly selects three names out of the pool of current GrassHopper members that have opted-in to be eligible to receive that month's available samples.
For those that win each month's lottery (there can only be up to three winners per batch), I'll get in touch via email and we can work out shipping/handling fees via PayPal. I wish I could send out all samples free of charge, but as an up-and-coming business, every penny I'm saving is going directly into brewery capital :) ...which is a good thing. However, you get the unique opportunity to provide feedback on a future flagship or seasonal beer. Isn't that awesome?
Many of you have indicated that you still want to get a taste even if your name isn't selected in the lottery and have offered to (pre)offset the shipping costs to do so. If you want to do this (totally welcomed by the way), simply get in touch with me via email to a) see what will be available for lottery at the end of the month; and b) what batches have yet to be bottled and when they'll be available - this way, you can pre-reserve a sample of the batch of your choosing. The more lead-time you can give me, the better.
I've said before that I want to make this experience as interactive as possible - and it's amazing how much bigger a factor social networking has played in GrassLands' evolution than I had originally anticipated. It boggles my mind that there are people that I've never met that are interested in what I'm doing...and not only interested, but encouraging and eager to be involved. That's so inspiring and motivating for us and I can't reiterate that enough. Some of these beers I think are just about ready to go; others, I would definitely LOVE to get your input. Cool! This should be fun! Get on it, GrassHoppers!
